Life as an African Truck Driver in Europe: What to Expect

The work itself is often easier than at home: modern trucks, strictly enforced rest periods, and well-maintained roads. EU regulations limit driving to nine hours a day, and employers take these rules seriously because the fines are enormous.

The cost of living surprises many drivers. A €2,800 salary sounds enormous in rand or US dollars, but rent, food and transport in Western Europe consume a large share. Most of our drivers still send home significantly more than they could earn locally — but budget realistically, especially in your first months.

Winter is a genuine adjustment. Driving in snow, short daylight hours and sub-zero temperatures take getting used to. Employers provide winter driving training, and our drivers say the second winter is far easier than the first.

The distance from family is the hardest part. Most contracts include annual flights home, and video calls help, but be honest with yourself and your family about the sacrifice before you commit. The drivers who thrive are the ones who planned for it.
